Deep Impact, film d’azione diretto da Mimi Leder, è la storia di una strana cometa che sembra stia per schiantarsi sulla Terra. Tutto ha inizio quando Leo Beiderman (Elijah Wood), un adolescente che ama l'astronomia, scopre uno corpo celeste mentre sta guardando il cielo col telescopio. Quando il ragazzino avvisa il suo insegnante, l’uomo decide di informare immediatamente l'astronomo Marcus Wolf (Charles Martin Smith), che capisce si tratti di una cometa in rotta di collisione con la Terra. Mentre corre per avvisare le autorità, tuttavia, muore in un tragico incidente d’auto, senza riuscire a informare nessuno. Passa un anno e il mondo viene a sapere che una cometa si sta dirigendo verso la Terra e che lo schianto provocherà terribili conseguenze per gli esseri umani.
