Melania arriva a Bodega Bay con una coppia di pappagallini detti "inseparabili" da regalare a Mitch, giovane avvocato che abita con la madre e la sorellina Cathy. Durante la traversata della baia viene ferita da un gabbiano. Sembra un incidente, ma la realtà si rivela ben diversa: uccelli di ogni tipo si coalizzano in un'inspiegabile minaccia. Un incubo, che si conclude con l'assalto dei pennuti alla casa di Mitch. Da una novella di Daphne du Maurier, sceneggiata da Evan Hunter alias Ed McBain, uno dei capolavori di Hitchcock; attraverso una serie di scene in apparenza banali, un ritratto apocalittico della stupida specie umana e una raffigurazione delle sue paure più profonde.
