Atto di forza, film diretto da Paul Verhoeven, racconta le vicende di Douglas Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), un operaio edile che vive con sua moglie Lori (Sharon Stone). L’uomo continua a fare strani incubi su scenari futuri: siamo nel 2084 su Marte, quando due individui stanno passeggiando in tuta spaziale; uno dei due cade in un cratere e, rompendo il casco, provoca la depressurizzazione della tuta, morendo. Pur di dare una spiegazione ai suoi sogni, Douglas sviluppa una vera e propria ossessione per il pianeta rosso, tanto da recarsi alla Rekall, una società in grado di impiantare false memorie di viaggi grazie a un particolare tipo di realtà virtuale. Sconsigliato dal suo collega Harry (Robert Costanzo), l’uomo decide lo stesso di sottoporsi al trattamento, a una condizione: per vivacizzare l’esperienza virtuale, dovrà accettare di essere un agente segreto in cerca di antiche tecnologie aliene. Tutto sembra pronto e Douglas viene addormentato per l’innesto.
