A Southport, cittadina del North Carolina che si affaccia sull'oceano, quattro amici trascorrono la loro ultima estate prima di entrare al college. Dopo aver festeggiato al bar, vanno sul mare. Al ritorno, tutti hanno bevuto un po' troppo. Ray vuole accompagnare gli amici con la sua BMW. Ad una curva, improvvisamente, Ray investe un uomo. Spaventati e confusi, i ragazzi discutono su cosa fare della vittima. Chiamare la polizia, con il tasso alcoolico che verrebbe loro riscontrato, vorrebbe dire rinunciare a tutti i sogni futuri. Decidono allora di gettare il corpo nell'oceano e di mantenere il segreto sulla vicenda.
