Una bella mattina un agente del fisco apparentemente normale e generalmente solitario di nome Harold Crick inizia a sentire una voce femminile che descrive ogni sua singola azione, pensiero e sensazione con allarmante dovizia di particolari. La vita meticolosamente ordinata dell’agente viene sconvolta da questa narrazione che solo lui è in grado di sentire. Quando la voce dichiara che Harold Crick sta per morire, l’uomo capisce che deve scoprire chi sta scrivendo la sua storia e convincerlo a modificarne il finale.
