California, 1850. Tutti i cittadini californiani sono chiamati alle urne per decidere se congiungere o meno lo stato californiano agli Stati Uniti. Terminato il referendum nella cittadina di Zorro, un bandito dai denti di legno, Jacob McGivens, fa irruzione, rubando la scatola dei voti. Prima di fuggire, McGivens incontra Zorro, che inseguirà gli uomini del bandito. Zorro riesce a riprendere i voti ma, nella baruffa, McGivens riesce a tirare via la maschera dell'eroe, anche se non riesce a vederlo in faccia. Un paio di agenti della Pinkerton scoprono l'identità di Zorro e lo riconoscono: è don Alejandro Murieta de la Vega. Zorro si procurerà un'altra maschera strappando un lembo del mantello, anche se è ignaro che la sua identità è ormai conosciuta da due estranei.
