Il giovane editore Shop, alla vigilia del suo matrimonio con Merle, è vittima dell'incantesimo gettato su di lui da Gil, un'"allieva stregona" che ha messo in pratica gli insegnamenti della zia Queenie. Shop rinuncia al matrimonio e si innamora di Gil, ma questa che, come strega, non puo innamorarsi seriamente, si sente turbata pensando che solo la magia le ha permesso di conquistarlo, e decide di confessargli la verità. Shop va su tutte le furie e dapprima mostra di non credere alla stregoneria. Convinto pero' dai fatti ed anche per l'intervento di Queenie e del fratello di Gil, cerca di riconquistare l'amore di Merle, tentando di spiegarle come sono andate le cose: Merle pero' non gli crede e non vuol piu' saperne di lui.
