Sconvolto per aver assistito da bambino - casualmente - alla morte di un vecchio pellerossa, a causa di un incidente stradale, Jim Morrison ne rimane segnato per tutta la vita, al punto di convincersi di essere la reincarnazione di uno sciamano. Studente di cinematografia in California, si cimenta in composizioni poetiche scapigliate, e legge con molta passione Kerouac, Nietzsche, in particolare Blake, che lo suggestiona con l'immagine delle "Porte", delle barriere, cioè, della percezione, che sfida a superare per raggiungere l'infinito. Con questo intento, il giovane Morrison fonda nel 1965 "The Doors" (Le Porte), un gruppo musicale di cinque amici, con il quale consegue ben presto i primi successi, davanti a platee in prevalenza giovanili, travolte dalle sue musiche scatenate e dal suo esibizionismo trasgressivo e sfrenato fino all'osceno.
