Dopo sessant'anni di ibernazione, Ellen Ripley, unica sopravvissuta alla terribile avventura dell'astronave Nostromo, come giunge sulla Terra riceve l'incarico di ripartire per appurare come mai la colonia del pianeta Archeron abbia misteriosamente interrotto i contatti con la base. Giunta con una squadra di marines dello spazio presso la colonia, scopre che i pionieri sono rimasti vittime della proliferazione di mostruosi alieni, del tutto simili a quello che aveva attaccato il Nostromo. Ma il fatto ancora peggiore è che, in quel pianeta, si è annidata la terribile generatrice di quelle creature con il suo immenso nido. Eliminati uno per uno tutti i compagni di Ripley, in uno scontro titanico la donna guerriera e la gigantessa aliena lottano l'una per la salvezza della sua progenie, l'altra per la vita dell'unica sopravvissuta umana della colonia, Newt, una bambina.
