


Siamo nel 1816 durante l'ondata della restaurazione a seguito del Congresso di Vienna, con Napoleone a S. Elena e gli Austriaci a Milano. Il patrizio Fulvio Imbriani, ex giacobino ed ex ufficiale napoleonico liberato dal carcere ove era finito per la sua appartenenza ai Fratelli Sublimi, rientra in famiglia e lì, tra agi borghesi e ricordi domestici, decide di abbandonare la Carboneria. L'arrivo di Charlotte, la donna che lo ha reso padre di Massimiliano, lo coinvolge a causa dei fondi portati dall'Inghilterra per una rivoluzione nel Sud d'Italia. Nella villa degli Imbriani si consuma il primo tradimento di Fulvio che, inoltre, ruba il denaro per assicurare al figlio la pensione presso un istituto. Un'altra donna, Francesca, lo costringe a riprendere i rapporti con i congiurati. Guidati da Vanni Peste, Fulvio ed i restanti Fratelli Sublimi, pervengono in una terra del Meridione ove di nuovo il patrizio milanese tradisce, provocando l'eccidio dei compagni. Fulvio però rimane a sua volta vittima di un equivoco; e solo il giovane idealista, Allonsanfàn sopravvive fisicamente e come simbolo di fiducia nella rivoluzione ...
