Wyatt Earp, il famoso sceriffo federale di Dodge City, ha deciso di mettersi in affari con i suoi due fratelli, Virgil e Morgan nella cittadina di Tombstone. Al loro arrivo trovano l'anarchia. Una banda di fuorilegge, i Cow-boys, impongono la loro "legge". A Tombstone, arriva un amico di Wyatt, Doc Holliday, professionista del poker, nonché una delle pistole più veloci del West. Malato di tubercolosi, con la complicità della avventuriera Kate brucia la sua vita in sregolatezze. Wyatt rileva una quota in un saloon, e cerca di salvare il suo matrimonio dal naufragio. Nel saloon Wyatt conosce una giovane attrice e intreccia con lei una storia sentimentale. Decisi a non ricorrere alla violenza, quando viene vigliaccamente ucciso il vecchio sceriffo, i fratelli Earp non possono tirarsi indietro. I leader dei Cow-boys li stanno aspettando all'O.K. Corral. Il duello porta la temporanea disfatta dei Cow-boys, grazie anche al disinteressato appoggio di Doc Holliday, ma la loro vendetta non tarda.
