Basato sulla serie di comics DC di Max Allan e Richard Piers Rayner, il film è ambientato a Chicago nell'era della depressione e narra di Michael O'Sullivan, meglio conosciuto ad amici e nemici come l'Angelo della Morte. Pur coinvolto profondamente nel suo lavoro, O'Sullivan è anche dedito alla sua vita privata come padre di due giovani. Quando, però, questi due mondi entrano in collisione, tanto che deve assistere alla morte della moglie e del figlio più piccolo, O'Sullivan ed il figlio superstite, Michael jr., abbandonano la loro pacifica vita familiare e si imbarcano in un viaggio di vendetta.
