Nell'aprile 2009, mentre naviga nelle acque dell'oceano Indiano a 400 miglia da Mogadiscio, la nave cargo danese Maersk Alabama, capitanata dall'americano Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), è assaltata da un gruppo armato di pirati somali. Phillips, sposato con Andrea (Catherine Keener) e padre di due figli, non esita a offrirsi come ostaggio pur di mettere al salvo i membri del suo equipaggio e la nave. Durante i tre giorni successivi, passati in alto mare su una piccola scialuppa con i pirati, Phillips prova inutilmente a fuggire e a trattare con il nemico ma la situazione si risolverà solo con l'intervento dei cecchini dei Navy Seals americani.
