Il mancato fidanzamento fra il ricco Paul e l'estrosa intellettuale Helen provoca la rottura dei rapporti fra le due famiglie. Il giovane e squattrinato Leonard fa la conoscenza di Helen e di sua sorella maggiore, Margaret. Svaniti col tempo i motivi di attrito, la madre di Paul diviene molto amica di Margaret, tanto che, in punto di morte, affida a un biglietto la volontà di lasciarle Casa Howard, un cottage di sua proprietà. Molti altri drammatici avvenimenti si susseguono, finché Casa Howard ospiterà Margaret, ormai divisa dal marito, che assiste sua sorella Helen e il bambino di lei, avuto da Leonard.
