Il giovane artista Kurt Barnert si è rifugiato nella Germania dell'Ovest ma continua a essere tormentato dalle esperienze che ha fatto durante l'infanzia e la giovinezza sotto il nazismo e il successivo regime della DDR. Quando incontra la studentessa Ellie, Kurt si convince di aver incontrato l'amore della sua vita e inizia a creare dipinti che rispecchiano non solo il suo destino ma anche i traumi di un'intera generazione. Troverà però la dura opposizione del padre di lei.
