Nel 1941, Barton Fink, giovane commediografo, giunge a Hollywood assunto da un produttore. Alloggiato in uno squallido hotel, fa amicizia con Charlie, espansivo vicino di camera. W. P. Mayhew, sceneggiatore di successo, ma ormai alcolizzato, non gli è di alcun aiuto. Gli dà una mano la segretaria di questi, Audrey; Barton e Audrey vanno anche a letto insieme, ma la mattina dopo lui la trova orribilmente assassinata. Charlie lo aiuta a sbarazzarsi dal cadavere e poi sparisce.
