Dopo la morte del padre (Jude Law), rimasto ucciso nell’incendio sprigionatosi nel museo in cui lavorava, il ragazzino ha imparato a vivere nascosto all’interno della stazione di Parigi, sostituendo in gran segreto lo zio – anch’egli nel frattempo deceduto - nella riparazione dell’orologio e tirando a campare grazie a dei piccoli furti. Con l'obiettivo di portare a termine la costruzione dell'automa a cui il padre stava lavorando, ruba i pezzi di cui necessita da un negozio di giocattoli all’interno della stazione stessa. Qui, conosce l’eccentrica Isabelle, che lo conduce in un’affascinante avventura al cospetto dell'illusionista e regista George Melies (Ben Kingsley).
