In piena epoca vittoriana, un medico (Hugh Dancy) e un suo amico (Rupert Everett) si propongono di porre fine a quella che considerano una vera tragedia, l’isterismo femminile che, di punto in bianco, cambia l’umore delle donne con cui hanno a che fare, rendendole piene di rabbia, nevrotiche e spesso anche depresse senza alcuna ragione.
