Lenyan (Richard Pryor), coinvolto con un potente criminale che la polizia ha una gran fretta di incastrare, viene arrestato per essere usato come esca. In prigione lo attendono gli scagnozzi del boss pronti a impedirgli di nuocere con tutti i mezzi. Lenyan si finge pazzo ed è ricoverato all'ospedale psichiatrico, nonostante qualche riserva dei periti. In una notte di black-out, nel panico generale, Lenyan è scambiato per medico e costretto a prestare servizio con le prevedibili conseguenze tragicomiche. Il film è un cocktail maldestro di elementi di tensione, comici e sentimentali. Solo Richard Pryor è in gran forma, ma non sempre basta.
