Robyn Davidson (Mia Wasikowska), intrepida viaggiatrice e scrittrice, nel 1977 decide di sfidare le sue forze partendo per un trekking solitario di 2700 chilometri, che da Alice Springs la condurrà verso l'oceano Indiano attraversando tutto il deserto australiano. Accompagnata solo dal suo cane e quattro imprevedibili cammelli, è seguita da vicino dal fotografo Rick Smolan (Adam Driver), che cattura le immagini per il National Geographic. Durante l'epico e straordinario viaggio in uno degli ultimi luoghi più selvaggi al mondo, Robyn imparerà a fare l'impensabile e ad apprezzare il piacere della vera solitudine.
