Le sorelline Victoria e Lilly sono scomparse senza lasciar traccia lo stesso giorno in cui i loro genitori sono stati assassinati. Cinque anni dopo, vengono ritrovate vive in una fatiscente casa nei boschi e affidate allo zio Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) e alla sua fidanzata Annabel (Jessica Chastain). Man mano che prova a far condurre alle due bambine un'esistenza normale, Annabel si rende conto che in loro c'è qualcosa che non va e si convince dell'esistenza di una strana presenza nella loro abitazione. Comincia così a porsi mille domande su come Victoria e Lilly siano riuscite a sopravvivere da sole e su chi abbia potuto aiutarle.
