Hess Greene, antropologo afro-americano benestante e colto, è intento a studiare alcuni reperti provenienti da un'antica tribù africana quando viene a contatto con un antico pugnale Ashanti. Complice l'arrivo dell'ansioso collega Lafayette Hightower e qualche bicchiere di troppo, ne consegue una notte segnata da un omicidio sanguinoso e da un suicidio. Il pugnale africano rende però Hess immortale e con una insaziabile dipendenza dal sangue. La nuova sete ossessionerà da quel momento ogni sua mossa fino a quando l'amore non gli presenterà una nuova sfida da affrontare.
