Nel 1947, il professor Humbert arriva in una piccola città del New England dove lo attende un posto di insegnante di letteratura francese. Cercando alloggio, gli capita una stanza in casa della vedova Charlotte. Il posto non sarebbe molto di suo gusto, ma decide di fermarsi dopo aver visto in giardino la figlia dodicenne di Charlotte, Lolita, dalla quale subito rimane affascinato. Charlotte corteggia Humbert che alla fine, pur di stare accanto a Lolita, accetta di sposare la donna. Dopo qualche tempo, Charlotte muore in un incidente. Humbert e Lolita, che hanno ormai avviato un rapporto amoroso, decidono di lasciare la cittadina e cominciano un viaggio attraverso l'America...
