Dopo essere stato lasciato dalla sua ragazza, Art (Robert Pattinson) ritorna a vivere dai suoi genitori. In questo momento di crisi, Art è molto infelice, anche perché come musicista si sente un fallito, dato che le sue ballate non sono percepite come lui vorrebbe dal pubblico. Utilizza una somma di denaro che ha ricevuto in eredità dal nonno per assumere un eccentrico guru del comportamento, tale Dr. Ellington (Powell Jones), del quale ha letto un libro, che arriverà dal Canada per vivere con lui a casa dei suoi in Inghilterra. Art spera che la convivenza con questo fantomatico dottore lo aiuti a porre fine ai suoi problemi di relazione con i suoi genitori e con il suo mondo. Inizia così il doloroso viaggio di Art che lo porterà a definire la sua esistenza e il difficoltoso rapporto che ha con il mondo.
