Nel corso di un esperimento, il fisico Bruce Banner viene colpito dai micidiali raggi gamma che modificano il suo tessuto genetico trasformandolo, ogni volta che si arrabbia, in un mostro verde. Da questo momento è costretto a fuggire visto che sulle sue tracce c'è l'esercito che vorrebbe utilizzarlo come arma. Gli uomini dal canto loro lo rifiutanto in quanto è un mutante che non riesce a controllare i suoi accessi d'ira.
