Susan Wheeler è medico chirurgo presso il moderno Boston Memorial Hospital come il dottor Mark Bellows che con lei convive quando la stanchezza non li porta a delle rotture di breve durata. Un giorno, mentre viene sottoposta a raschiamento, Nancy Freenly, 28enne amica di Susan, cade in coma profondo e dopo qualche giorno muore.
