Los Angeles, 2019. Il gioco televisivo dell'anno si chiama "The Running Man" (l'uomo che corre). Il produttore del programma, Killian, è disposto a compiere qualsiasi efferatezza pur di aumentare l'audience. La regola del gioco è semplice: in una zona delimitata un uomo deve riuscire a sopravvivere agli attacchi di quattro micidiali campioni. Normalmente non ci riesce, ma questa volta il concorrente si chiama Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger), uno che non è disposto a fare da vittima sacrificale. Aiutato da due compagni e da una quarta concorrente, Amber (Maria Conchita Alonso), Ben riesce a eliminare i suoi temibili avversari.
