Nel parco Gorky, a Mosca, vengono scoperti tre cadaveri irriconoscibili. L'ispettore della polizia criminale Arkadi Renko conduce l'inchiesta e finisce per convincersi che nell'omicidio sia implicato il Kgb. Ritrova un paio di pattini per ghiaccio che lo conducono a Irina, siberiana ed ex dissidente. Renko sospetta che il legame tra Irina e i tre cadaveri sia l'uomo d'affari Jack Osborne. Dietro a tutto si profila un traffico illecito di zibellini...
