Uno sgangherato trio di malviventi si rifugia in un bar dopo la solita rapina andata male. Alla disperata ricerca di una via di scampo i tre prendono in ostaggio cinque persone che hanno la disgrazia di trovarsi in quel momento nel locale. Gli agenti federali e la polizia di New Orleans circondano immediatamente il luogo del crimine e i tre rapinatori iniziano una lunga ed estenuante trattativa basata sull'equivoco di uno scambio d'identità.
