Durante la seconda guerra mondiale, un insolito plotone composto da sette direttori di musei, curatori e storici dell'arte, riceve da Roosevelt il compito di recarsi in Germania per salvare i capolavori d'arte rubati dai nazisti e restituirli ai legittimi proprietari. Esperti più di quadri che di armi, intrappolati dietro le linee nemiche e alle prese con l'esercito tedesco che ha ricevuto l'ordine di distruggere ogni cosa prima della caduta del Terzo Reich, i Monuments Men - così venivano chiamati gli uomini del plotone - si ritroveranno impegnati in una corsa contro il tempo per evitare la distruzione di oltre 1000 anni di cultura e di conquiste dell'umanità, a rischio della loro stessa vita.
