Trama
Nell'anno 180 d.C., il valente generale Massimo Decimo Meridio guida l'esercito romano alla vittoria durante la guerra contro i Marcomanni in Germania, guadagnandosi ancora di piГ№ la stima dell'anziano imperatore romano Marco Aurelio, gravemente ammalato. Marco Aurelio, che sente prossima la fine, sceglie, in luogo del figlio Commodo, considerato inadatto al ruolo, il generale Massimo come proprio successore al quale affidare il compito di far tornare Roma ad essere una repubblica, restituendo il potere al senato, ovvero al popolo romano, come era prima dell'avvento dell'etГ imperiale. Inizialmente riluttante, Massimo chiede tempo per decidere e si ritira in tenda a pregare gli Dei affinchГ© lo aiutino a decidere per il suo futuro e proteggano la sua famiglia, idealmente rappresentata da due statuette che Massimo porta con sГ©. Nel frattempo Marco Aurelio comunica la sua decisione al figlio, che era giunto da Roma insieme alla sorella Lucilla ma Commodo, deluso e afflitto per la scelta del padre, lo uccide soffocandolo con il proprio petto prima che renda pubblica la sua decisione. Massimo capisce che l'imperatore non ГЁ morto per cause naturali, ma ГЁ stato ucciso dal figlio, dunque rifiuta di sottomettersi a Commodo, che allora dГ ordine alla guardia pretoriana di uccidere lui e la sua famiglia, dopodichГ© rientra a Roma come imperatore.
