Mentre prova a varcare il confine messicano con appresso una grossa quantità di denaro rubato, il criminale Driver (Mel Gibson) viene arrestato dalle autorità ispaniche e rinchiuso nell’infernale prigione di El Pueblito, regno di spacciatori e efferati assassini. In un universo contraddistinto da corruzione, violenza, droga, alcol e abusi sessuali, l’uomo scopre lentamente come sopravvivere e tornare sulla via della legalità grazie a un bambino di nove anni. Il piccolo viene tenuto tra le sbarre per il suo prezioso gruppo sanguigno, utile per le trasfusioni del pericoloso Javi, in attesa di trapianto del fegato.
