Tom Ripley accetta l'incarico del padre di Dickie e lo va a cercare in Italia dove pare che si sia rifugiato. Arrivato sul posto Tom conosce il ragazzo e la sua fidanzata Margie e viene attratto dal loro modo di vivere spensierato. Ben presto Tom entra nella vita di Dickie che infastidito lo caccia.
