Alcune donne spariscono nelle campagne della Virginia e l'unico indizio sono dei resti umani che iniziano ad apparire qua e la, nei mucchi di neve addossati all'autostrada. Le tracce sono molto deboli e la polizia brancola nel buio. Anche per questo, guidata da un prete visionario, prova a seguire una pista che conduce a uno strano esperimento medico che potrebbe essere in qualche modo connesso alla sparizione multipla. Si tratterebbe del caso ideale per gli ex-agenti Fox Mulder e Dana Scully, che però non vogliono più aver a che fare con le ricerche che svolgevano in passato per la sezione investigazioni sul paranormale dell'FBI, chiusa da tempo.
