Reduce dal Vietnam, Birdy è totalmente annichilito, ripiegato su se stesso. Nei bei tempi andati, era appassionato al volo degli uccelli; adesso, in ospedale, la vicinanza di un vecchio amico, anch'egli ferito in guerra, gli dà sostegno. Con il suo aiuto, riaffiora il passato e un sogno mai realizzato: volare. Parker si butta sugli stereotipi del dramma psicologico-militare già sfruttati da Hollywood in mille occasioni. Lo fa con il suo solito stile: greve, esibizionista, incurante del ridicolo involontario a cui può a volte portare l'eccesso di enfasi. Le prodezze tecniche (sequenza del volo) non rialzano di molto il livello dell'insieme.
