Quattro interpretazioni eccellenti (tutte candidate ai premi Oscar come anche film, regia, sceneggiatura, ma vinse soltanto il veterano Eugen Schufftan per la fotografia), costruzione narrativa compatta, dialoghi infallibili, il film è rimasto nella memoria degli spettatori soprattutto per la sagace descrizione del mondo americano del biliardo, come apologo sull'America amara e i suoi falsi miti: un'aria che quasi si respira. P. Newman riprese il personaggio di "Fast" Eddie Nelson in "Il colore dei soldi" (1986) di Martin Scorsese.
