Nella campagna del New England viene trovato un cadavere: si tratta del secondo marito di Jennifer, un'abitante del luogo. Alcuni paesani s'ingegnano a nascondere il morto in mille modi, ma lo sceriffo comincia a sospettare. Soltanto quando risulta che il decesso è dovuto a una crisi cardiaca, il corpo viene rimesso al posto dov'era stato trovato. Nel trambusto, intanto, due coppie hanno avuto modo di formarsi.
