I protagonisti della vicenda sono il capitano pirata Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), il fabbro Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) e la splendida figlia del governatore, Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley), le cui vite si intrecciano nel villaggio di Port Royal.
Will è segretamente innamorato dei Elizabeth la quale, otto anni prima, lo aveva salvato da morte certa in mare. La ragazza, seppur costretta a convolare a nozze con il commodoro James Norrington (Jake Davenport), prova un sentimento molto forte per il giovane Turner.
