L'uomo dei sogni, film diretto da Phil Alden Robinson, vede protagonista Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), un agricoltore che vive nell'Iowa con la moglie Annie (Amy Madigan) e la figlia Karin (Gaby Hoffmann). Una sera, mentre passeggia tra le piante del suo campo di granturco, viene colpito da una voce che gli dice: "Se lo costruisci, lui tornerà". Incredulo per quanto accaduto, è certo che si tratti di un sogno, fino a quando non sente ancora la stessa frase. D’istinto, senza capire bene il perché, l’uomo costruisce un campo da baseball proprio dietro la sua abitazione. Qualche giorno dopo sul terreno di gioco compare “Shoeless" Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) insieme agli altri sette giocatori della dei Chicago White Sox, squalificati per sempre nel 1919 per aver venduto una partita delle World Series. I suoi compiti, però, non sono terminati.
