Al fotoreporter L.B. Jefferies manca solo un'ultima settimana di convivenza con un'ingessatura alla gamba sinistra prima di poter tornare ai reportage d'assalto. Una settimana di una calda estate durante la quale, oltre alle cure dell'infermiera Stella e alle attenzioni della bellissima compagna Lisa Freemont, Jefferies passa il tempo affacciato alla finestra del suo appartamento a scrutare le abitudini dei vicini di casa. Fra questi, c'è una coppia di sposi novelli, una giovane e graziosa ballerina, un pianista tormentato dal fallimento, una coppia di coniugi con cane che dormono all'aperto, una donna affranta dalla solitudine e, soprattutto, un tranquillo uomo di mezza età che si prende cura della moglie malata.
