Speed, è un film d’azione del 1994, diretto da Jan de Bont. Nella città di Los Angeles due agenti della SWAT (squadra speciale anticrimine), Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) e Harry Temple, sono impegnati a disinnescare un ordigno piazzato da un terrorista in un ascensore pieno di persone.
Dopo aver mandato in fumo il piano dell’attentarore, che sperava di ottenere dallo Stato un ingente riscatto in cambio della vita degli ostaggi, i due poliziotti partono immediatamente all’inseguimento del terrorista, identificato successivamente come Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper). Quest’ultimo, pur di non essere catturato, fa esplodere una bomba fingendo di morire durante l’esplosione. Un paio di giorni dopo, quando tutto sembra essere tornato alla normalità, il dinamitardo, sopravvissuto alla deflagrazione, progetta un altro piano perverso: fa esplodere un autobus in transito uccidendo il suo autista.
