New York, anni Quaranta. Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro) inizia a tirare di pugilato nel Bronx, con il fratello minore Joey (Joe Pesci), che gli fa da manager. Jake è una persona irrequieta e i continui litigi violenti con la moglie lo portano al divorzio. Nel contempo nasce una storia d'amore con la bella Vickie Thailer (Cathy Moriarty), con cui si sposa e ha dei figli.
Purtroppo, anche con la nuova moglie il pugile dimostra la propria incapacità di contenere l’ira, che sfoga fisicamente e verbalmente, a causa della sua gelosia e per motivi quasi sempre futili.
