La storia inizia nell'Inghilterra del secondo dopoguerra. Siamo a metà degli anni 50 quando Stevens riceve una lettera dalla sua ex collega, la governante Miss. Kenton (Emma Thompson), che gli chiede un incontro dopo tanti anni di lontananza.
La bellissima magione di Darlington Hall, in cui Stevens ha prestato servizio come maggiordomo dall'impeccabile stile british, è stata venduta al ricco americano Jack Lewis (Christopher Reeve) dopo la morte del vecchio proprietario Lord Darlington (James Fox). Così Stevens parte per incontrare Miss. Kenton, diventata nel frattempo Mrs. Benn e ormai nonna, per proporle di tornare a lavorare a Darlington Hall sotto la nuova proprietà.
Il viaggio è un'occasione per ricordare la propria vita di maggiordomo, dagli anni in cui il suo padrone, filonazista, utilizzava la casa per tessere rapporti diplomatici fra Germania e Gran Bretagna, fino alla decadenza seguita alla guerra, quando Lord Darlington veniva additato da tutti come collaborazionista e rinnegato persino dal figlioccio Cardinal (Hugh Grant).
