Un'istituzione inglese hard rock la cui influenza sull'heavy metal non può essere sopravvalutata, Black Sabbath non solo ha aperto la strada al genere, ma ha contribuito a lanciare la carriera di uno dei suoi personaggi più colorati e controversi in Ozzy Osbourne. La band ha distillato il fumo e la contesa della sua città industriale in un'esplosione punitiva di blues-rock pesante carico di condanna attraverso il testo distopico del bassista Geezer Butler, che si appoggiava pesantemente sull'occulto, e il riff sismico del chitarrista Tony Iommi. Se abbinato al lavoro economico ma formidabile di Bill Ward dietro il kit e al tenore primordiale di Osbourne, l'effetto era sia potente che accessibile - un modello per aspiranti spacciatori decibel di ogni livello di abilità.

La band si è formata nel 1968 con il nome inadatto della Polka Tulk Blues Band - Iommi e Ward, che avevano appena lasciato il mitico blues pub Mythology, stavano cercando di portare il genere in una direzione più solida. Hanno arruolato i servizi di Butler e Osbourne, che avevano entrambi suonato insieme in un gruppo chiamato Rare Breed, e alla fine dell'anno stavano operando sotto il moniker Earth.
