Il gruppo jazz americano si è formato a Houston, Texas nel 1956, stabilendosi nel 1961 con il nome The Jazz Crusaders, abbreviato in The Crusaders nel 1971. Il loro successo più noto "Street Life" è stato responsabile di portare all'attenzione del pubblico il cantante ospite Randy Crawford; la formazione del gruppo a quel tempo comprendeva i membri fondatori Wilton Felder (sax tenore, basso), Nesbert "Stix" Hooper (percussioni) e Joe Sample (tastiere) con Larry Carlton (chitarra).
