A Los Angeles, Mike Church, un detective privato esperto nei ritrovare persone smarrite, avendo accettato di indagare su una donna di gradevole aspetto che ha perso la memoria ed è tormentata da incubi notturni, viene contattato da Franklyn Madson, un eccentrico antiquario ipnotizzatore, che spera di scoprire l'identità di costei, soprannominata Grace. Con loro grande sorpresa la donna, in ipnosi, descrive con minuzia la contrastata vita matrimoniale di Margaret, una pianista, e di Roman Strauss, un compositore due coniugi ormai entrambi morti da quaranta anni: lei uccisa con una forbice nel suo letto; lui giustiziato perchè ritenuto l'assassino. Grace, così, s'identifica in Margaret convinta che in Mike riviva Roman. Indagando, il detective scopre che Franklyn, a quel tempo adolescente, ha ucciso Margaret perchè aveva tolto Roman Strauss all'amore della propria madre Inga, all'epoca governante del musicista. Dopo aver ucciso, in un momento di raptus, la madre Inga, ormai molto anziana, Madson tenta di uccidere Grace e Mike ma nella lotta con costoro soccombe.
