Jake Sully è un ex marine rimasto disabile in battaglia, che viene mandato sul pianeta Pandora, a 44 anni luce dalla Terra, in una missione di esplorazione. La missione non è però guidata solo dalla sete di conoscenza: su Pandora si trovano infatti preziose riserve di energia, necessarie alla Terra, messa in ginocchio da una catastrofe ecologica. Gli indigeni però non ci stanno e si ribellano alla colonizzazione: compito di Jake, tramite il suo avatar, sarà proprio riuscire a conoscerli e scoprire come farsi accettare da loro per poi sottometterli. Ma l'esplorazione apre nuove prospettive...
