


Il falegname Geppetto si costruisce un burattino di legno, a cui dà il nome di Pinocchio. La Fata Turchina, sua protettrice lo trasforma subito in un bambino in carne ed ossa, facendosi promettere che sarà un bambino "per bene", ubbidiente e studioso, bastone della vecchiaia del suo genitore. Siccome il bambino, che ha conservato il carattere vivace e ribelle del burattino, ne combina di tutti i colori, la Fata lo fa tornare di legno per punirlo. Le trasformazioni si succederanno più volte e, una volta, Pinocchio diverrà persino somaro. La vicenda termina un poco prima del libro, cioè quando Geppetto e Pinocchio escono dal ventre della Balena: quasi un ritorno alla vita, una presa definitiva di contatto con la realtà.
