È il 1977, ovvero tre anni dopo che l'impeachment seguito al famoso caso Watergate determinò la fine della presidenza Nixon negli USA e l'avvento di Jimmy Carter. Per quei tre lunghi anni Nixon rifiutò di rilasciare interviste in merito all'argomento. Poi all'improvviso indicò di volere affidare all'anchorman britannico David Frost la sua versione dei fatti, convinto di poter così riabilitare la sua immagine pubblica. Seguirono veri e propri duelli, l'ultimo dei quali fu determinante per stabilire le responsabilità dell'ex presidente.
