Arthur Brennan (Matthew McConaughey) si reca in escursione a Aokigahara, un posto meglio conosciuto come "il mare degli alberi", una misteriosa e fitta foresta alla base del monte Fuji in Giappone dove la gente va a riflettere sulla vita e sulla morte. Dopo aver individuato il posto giusto per morire, Arthur incontra Takumi Nakamura (Ken Watanabe), un giapponese che come lui ha perso la propria strada. I due uomini iniziano insieme un cammino di riflessione e sopravvivenza, che farà rinascere in Arthur la voglia di vivere e di riavvicinarsi alla moglie (Naomi Watts).
